COGNITIVE REACT TRAINER

The Cognitive React Trainer is a low-tech,
exergaming program developed for older adults
who are at high-risk for falling and fall-related
injuries. Exergaming refers to a videogame
program designed to facilitate exercise
(aerobic or anaerobic), play, or body movement.
Depending on available technology, exergames
can track body movement for the sake of the
user’s physical benefit and progress. The
Cognitive React Trainer provides a series of
exercises with visual cues to encourage
cognitive reasoning paired with purposeful
movement.

Walking and standing in place requires a conglomerate of skills besides musculoskeletal processes. Movement with purpose, or motor
praxis, is a combination of cognitive planning and muscle strength. The brain is constantly telling the body what to do and how to
move depending on environmental demands. Furthermore, sensation (touch, pain, spatial awareness, vestibular, visual, taste, etc.)
communicates with the environment and sends messages to the brain to tell the body to maintain or change course. The Cognitive
React Trainer works on all these skills through a single program rather than each body process in isolation.
